The search is on for a solution to the cost-of-living adjustment for doctoral students

In contrast to other ETH Zurich employees, it is still unclear for doctoral students whether and when they will receive a cost-of-living adjustment and how this will be financed. The Executive Board is unhappy with this situation. A working group will seek a solution in early 2023.

Four new PeKo members elected

The Personnel Commission has four new members: a laboratory technician from the Department of Earth Sciences, a PR and communications specialist from ID, a business developer from the 英皇娱乐 Services staff unit and a project controller from the Finance Department will be championing the interests of ETH Zurich staff from this June. Christopher Sauder Engeler has been confirmed for a second term as PeKo President and André Blanchard is a new PeKo Honorary Member.

Guidelines for good working relationships

New rules will apply to those starting their doctoral studies at ETH in the autumn. After two extensive consultation rounds, the ETH Executive Board passed the revised version of the Ordinance on Doctoral Studies on 26 January 2021. The new guidelines make it compulsory for doctoral students to have a second supervisor and stipulate more precise rules for collaboration between professors and doctoral students.

At its last meeting the Executive Board decided to strengthen the ombudspersons and specialist support units, setting up more contact points and advisory services. It also discussed the feedback from the consultation process for the development of the doctoral programme, and passed a corresponding package of measures with a number of changes.

ETH Zurich is launching a comprehensive research initiative in a previously overlooked field of medicine, namely the medium and long-term rehabilitation of patients. The last Executive Board meetings also covered the election of two new ombudspersons, the annual gender monitoring report and the new Financial Regulations.
The ombudspersons’ trio is complete
The University Assembly was able to nominate two new ombudspersons for the first time: Margrit Leuthold and Peter Frischknecht, who were subsequently elected by the Executive Board. The widely supported process will strengthen the office, says Werner Wegscheider, University Assembly President and Professor of Experimental Physics.
Head of the Collegium Helveticum passes away
Thomas Hengartner, Director of the Collegium Helveticum, died on 10 May at the age of just 57. He had taken over management of the joint ETH, UZH and ZHdK think-tank in 2016.

According to a survey conducted by the Academic Association of Scientific Staff (AVETH), ETH doctoral students are on balance satisfied with the supervision they receive from professors. But a number of inadequacies were also clear to see. The supervision is now set to be optimised.

Improving mobility with e-bikes – testers needed

E-bikes are an effective way for ETH Zurich to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations. This summer, the university will be testing out several models that will allow ETH students and employees to use e-bikes. Currently, 100 people are needed to test an app-based lending system.

Federal Council elects three new members to ETH Board
In the general election of the ETH Board for the 2017-2020 period, the Federal Council elected three new members and confirmed all of the incumbents who stood for re-election. The president of the ETH Board, Fritz Schiesser, was re-elected for another term.
A fig tree to mark the end of an era
In early June, Peter Widmayer led his last University Assembly meeting as president. As a token of appreciation for his services, the University Assembly presented the avid gardener with a fig tree.

Reorganisation of women professors’ group at ETH Zurich

Founded in 2011, the women’s network is now welcoming a new chairwoman. Federal Council appoints Martin Vetterli President of EPFL
The Swiss Federal Council today appointed Professor Martin Vetterli as the new President of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), thus following the recommendation of the ETH Board. He will take office on 1 January 2017. Martin Vetterli succeeds Patrick Aebischer.

SNSF project funding: more attractive and more effective
In autumn 2016, the SNSF will introduce changes to project funding: the maximum duration of projects will be raised from three to four years and grants can be used more flexibly. Researchers are encouraged to focus as much as possible on a single research project.
